Town's spruce-up goes a long way
FALLSBURG: It's the little things people are doing that add up to a big improvement.

Small flourishes are starting to brighten the Town of Fallsburg.
A brand-new gazebo, delivered Monday night, now decorates Main Street in South Fallsburg. Further east on Route 42, in the heart of Fallsburg, a small wooden kiosk on a broad wood deck looks over the Neversink River at the intersection with Old Falls Road. The town hopes to eventually turn it into an information center.
"We feel we're making progress," said Fallsburg Supervisor Steven Levine. "It's a long process."
Fallsburg and its people have been trying to beautify the town for years, and work is paying off, a bit at a time.
"The overlook (at Old Falls) took four years," Levine said. The town had to buy the property. Then it had to demolish the old Crossways Restaurant. In between, there was finagling with the state over the plans.
"A lot of people have stopped by, and are happy with it," he said. "They like to see this kind of progress in the town."
This is progress: Down the riverbank from the kiosk, the Neversink descends a series of small waterfalls, then swirls and eddies as it passes massive rocks on its way to the deep pool south of the Old Falls Road bridge.
The current has carved layered half-moons in the sides of the water-worn stone. Along the banks, wildflowers bloom amid the greenery: daisies, butter-and-eggs, buttercups, yarrow and Queen Anne's lace, milkweed.
In South Fallsburg, progress is petunias, holly and rose bushes planted on a once-vacant lot. The new gazebo was expected to be set into place by last night, said Paige Maxwell, of Sullivan First of South Fallsburg. The group aims to improve and promote Sullivan County.
"We're excited," she said. "It's going to be beautiful."
The gazebo has built-in benches, but Maxwell and her group plan to raise money to buy more benches, and to pave an entrance to the gazebo. A few years ago, the lot was a store. It burned, and the building was razed.
The lot stayed empty until Sullivan First decided to gather donations for the garden park three months ago.
After digging deep for cash, residents began to dig up dirt to put the little park together.
"People have been stopping us while we're working and telling us what a big deal it is," Maxwell said.

New feature for staying in touch
Many of you have expressed interest in communicating more easily with fellow Omegans. You may have noticed the Google talk space on the right-hand side of the screen. I put it there for specifically this purpose. Just get a Google email account (no charge)and we can have individual and group chats instantly. I recently had a three-way chat with Marcia and Shelley.
So please take advantage of this. If you have any questions please let me know. Also, in the near future, we will be able to talk in real-time using Google Talk.
